Online exam provision at Newcastle University has developed from a small pilot in 2007 to supporting approximately 20,000 secure high-stakes exam sittings each academic year. The Online Assessment and Feedback Service uses the institutional VLE Blackboard’s test tool for system marked and short answer question-based exams.
Expansion has been constrained by technical limitations and computer cluster capacity. In 2017⁄18 we launched a pilot of WISEflow software to deliver Bring Your Own Device and typed written online exams. As we prepare for a larger-scale pilot in 2018⁄19 we aim to expand the range of online assessment types available, while addressing key considerations of logistics and scalability.
