STACK-aided active learning environment for advanced engineering mathematics: pre- and post-COVID experience

In this talk we compare our experience of delivering a course in advanced second-year engineering mathematics over the last two years, supported by the STACK computer algebra system for formative and summative assessments (100% in 2020/21). We discuss technical and pedagogic challenges for semi-automatic assessment of further topics in calculus (such as Laplace transform, vector calculus and linear algebra). We then compare a STACK-based exam to a manually-marked examination paper. Finally, we illustrate how active learning, distributed over the course duration, help achieve better learning outcomes.
