The effectiveness of remediating mathematical Common Student Errors in e-Assessments

The Common Student Errors Project (CSE Project) has been running at the University of the West of England (UWE, Bristol) since 2017. The main aim of this project is to introduce a method to detect CSEs and to provide tailored feedback in Engineering Mathematics e-Assessment questions.

In this talk we briefly describe the process of collecting CSEs and providing personalised enhanced feedback to students who made CSEs on Dewis e-Assessment questions in order to remediate these misconceptions. We then present how we compared students’ test data extracted from the Dewis e-Assessment system before and after receiving personalised enhanced feedback in order to find the effectiveness of addressing CSEs. Finally, we detail the promising outcomes on the effectiveness of remediating mathematical CSEs in e-Assessments.
